Common Questions About Laser Hair Removal
How does laser hair removal work?
The hair removal laser works by using a wavelength of light that targets the pigment in the hair to destroy it. For this reason, it is not effective for removal of grey, blond, or light colored hair.
What can I expect in a treatment session?
In a laser treatment session we will cover the area of hair with a series of pulses. Typical sessions last between 15 and 30 minutes. The area of treatment may be a little red immediately after the treatment, however this subsides in 15 to 30 minutes. Starting about a week later, the damaged hairs will shed on their own painlessly.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
You will feel each pulse of laser light. Some describe the sensation as pinching or similar to hair removal by threading. Some areas on the body are more sensitive than others. Most can tolerate the procedure without topical anesthesia.
How many treatments are required?
At any one time we have hairs at rest (telogen), growth (anagen), and shut-down (catagen) stages. Laser hair removal treats hairs that are in growth period. Therefore, hairs at rest or shut-down at the time of treatment will not be removed or treated. You can expect a 25 to 30 percent reduction of hairs in any given area per session. Most require between 2 and 4 treatments space 4 to 8 weeks apart.
What types of laser hair removal do you offer?
The laser machine that we use has two different wavelengths. A short wavelength setting (755 nm) works better on lighter skin. A longer wavelength setting (1064 nm) is safer on darker skin types.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal offers a permanent reduction in the hair in the area treated. However, some follicles may recover and you may develop new hairs over time. For this reason, you may have to do a touch-up every 3 to 5 years in the area of treatment.
What areas of the body do you treat?
We offer laser hair removal to the upper lip, cheeks, chin, underarms, bikini, and other limited areas. Treatment sessions typically range from $100 to $500 per session based on the size of the area being treated.
